Timeline: Shortly after the end of the anime (not the manga).
Age: 18
Appearance: Miroku is a young man with a lean build who stands at a fairly average height (about 5'6" - 5'7"). He has dark black hair that's at least at chin length, though it's most often pulled back into a small, low ponytail. He has two golden earrings in his left ear and one in his right ear. His eyes are a deep violet-blue that seem to match the violet kesa he wears over long, billowing black robes - a sign of his position as a monk. Beneath the robe are green leggings and histypical white juban, though usually hidden from sight. On his feet are woven sandals, and he carries with him a staff with an ornate golden top, and six gold rings hang from the top.

On his right hand he has a purple glove that covers the palm of his hand and halfway up his forearm. Wrapped around this glove is a long string of light blue prayer beads.

Abilities: Miroku has several spiritual abilities relating to his position as a monk. He can sense demonic aura (jaki), exorcise demons and spirits, create small spiritual barriers (small ones by himself with his staff, and larger ones using ofuda), and charge/bless items with spiritual energy to protect against demons and other supernatural threats. In addition to this, he is relatively physically strong and nimble.

In his right hand, Miroku has a black hole (kazanna) that sucks in everything in its path unless sealed by the blue prayer beads he wears wrapped around his wrist and arm. This hole slowly grows bigger and bigger and will continue to do some until it kills him. If he were to have a child, this curse would pass on to his offspring in the event of his death. The only thing he can't suck in is poison (such as that belonging to Naraku's poisonous wasps), and he refuses to take in people.

Personality: Miroku is a good person through and through, despite some less than savory habits and tendencies.

He is very clever and charming, and can easily sweet talk his way out of most problems. He has an... odd set of morals, and will sometimes swindle people out of food, lodgings, or money to benefit himself, though has on many occasions helped people with difficult problems, expecting nothing in return. Despite being a monk, he'll also happily drink, gamble, and even steals sometimes (though never from someone who couldn't afford the loss). More than anything though, he loves a pretty face, and will shamelessly flirt with any woman he comes across, even going so far as to present them with his infamous question - 'Will you bear my child?'

He's generally cool tempered and level-headed, though he has his moments. Miroku is the kind of person you could go to with any sort of problem, but keeps his own problems to himself, wearing a mask of happy playfulness, even when he's not feeling that way.

History:

Decades before Miroku's birth, his grandfather, a talented monk by the name of Miyatsu, came across the evil demon Naraku. They fought for many years, until one day Naraku appeared to Miyatsu in the guise of a lovely courtesan. The same womanizing tendencies that Miroku displays are a family trait, and so Miyatsu was fooled by this disguise. Naraku used this opportunity to gain the upper hand, and cursed Miyatsu with a hole in his right hand. This hole, the kazanna, would suck in everything in its path if not sealed, and would pass on through Miyatsu's line until his family was stricken from the earth or they managed to destroy Naraku. It eventually grew and claimed Miyatsu's life, but not before being passed to Miroku's father. Miroku's father passed the curse to his son, and the kazanna eventually claimed his life as well.

Miroku witnessed his father's own death at a very young age, and from then on lived with the monk Mushin, who raised and trained him. Eventually Miroku struck out on his own in search of Naraku, though he occasionally returns to the temple in which he was raised.

At the age of eighteen, Miroku came across a small traveling group. Who they were wasn't important at the time - What was important was that they had a large piece of the Shikon no Tama, a sacred and magical jewel that could grant wishes and immense power to the one who held it. He succeeded in stealing the piece of the jewel that they carried, but was eventually tracked down by the group and, following a short battle, gave the jewel back. He then learned that they were the half-demon Inuyasha, a young woman from the future by the name of Kagome, and a kitsune child named Shippou. They were searching for all the pieces of the jewel, and though they didn't know it, were also enemies of the demon Naraku. After a little while, Miroku agreed to join them, and they traveled together to search for the jewel and to defeat Naraku.

Eventually they came into contact with a young demon slayer by the name of Sango. Her village had been destroyed by demons sent by Naraku, who hoped the gain the jewel shard there. She began to travel with them as well, and grew close to Miroku. Though her feelings for him were obvious, Miroku seemed to be oblivious for a long while, causing many issues between them. Still, he did seem to pay more attention to her, flirting with her and groping her more than he did with any other woman - Though, somehow, he had not asked her his question. He also did seem to worry about her more than the other members of their group, and always offered comfort to her when she needed it.

It's not clear when his feelings for her fully developed, but following a battle in which Sango was possessed and Miroku was forced to fight her to be able to save her, he came out with it. He confessed his feelings and asked her if, after Naraku was defeated, she would live with him and bear his children. She accepted, though he didn't answer when she asked if he'd stop flirting with other girls. They continued their travels together with their friends Inuyasha, Kagome, and Shippou, and hope some day to defeat Naraku and fulfill their promise to one another.
